Why codon.bio

Built for how research actually happens.

Collaborative

One map for the whole team.

Projects are shared with a team, and the research map updates as anyone works.

  • Invitation-only teams with admin, manager and member roles.

  • Every edit to a task, duration or dependency shows up for everyone.

  • Slack channels, Google Drive and Dropbox folders stay in sync with the project.

Three teammates edit the same project map while Slack, Google Drive and Dropbox connect to the project.

Analytical

Complex questions, answered in code.

Some questions need real analysis. The analysis agent writes the code, runs it in a sandboxed environment, and brings the results back to the chat.

  • Upload your own data and ask about it in plain language.

  • Complex queries generate the necessary SQL and Python code, and every script is saved with its output.

  • Built-in genomics tools take care of routine analysis steps.

An uploaded hg19 variant table is lifted to hg38: the analysis agent writes and runs a Python script, the GWAS agent runs a SQL query on the lifted positions, and the answer lists three Alzheimer's-associated variants with the generated files.

Transparent

Every agent demonstrates its process.

The co-scientist splits a question into specific sub-questions, sends each to the right agent, and consolidates the evidence.

  • Agents are added as earlier results come in, so nothing runs blind.

  • Each step's query and retrieved evidence stay inspectable in the trace.

  • Every claim in the answer links to the step and source that backs it.

A question fans out to agents that join the trace as results arrive, and the answer's citations point back at the steps.

Reproducible

Export the entire research process.

A chat is a record: messages, agent steps and sources travel together.

  • Export as a package, HTML or PDF.

  • Save to Google Drive and open from Drive on any device.

  • Imports preserve messages and workflow traces in a new thread.

A chat is saved to Google Drive from the export menu and restored from Drive with its traces intact.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

What is codon.bio?

codon.bio is an AI research platform for genomics and biomedical research. It organises a project's papers, data, code and conversations, answers questions by querying curated biomedical databases and the literature in parallel, and turns the work into a research plan it keeps up to date. It is built by DataTecnica.

Which databases does codon.bio search?

NCBI Gene and dbSNP, ClinVar, gnomAD, Ensembl including VEP consequences on GRCh38 and GRCh37, UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, OpenTargets, the GWAS Catalogue, SMR gene–trait associations, the CRISPRbrain, CRISPRlipid and CRISPRvirus Data Commons, PubMed and PubTator, Semantic Scholar, a curated variant-publication database, and the open web with per-domain trust scoring. You choose which sources are active, per project and per question.

How is this different from a general-purpose chatbot?

Answers are retrieved from named biomedical sources rather than recalled from training data, every claim keeps its citation, and the full trace of which agent called which tool with what query is inspectable. When a question needs computation, codon.bio writes and runs real Python or R against your data instead of estimating.

Can I use my own data?

Yes. Upload PDFs, CSVs, Excel workbooks, VCFs, code and documents, or link a Google Drive or Dropbox folder, a GitHub repository, or a Slack channel. Project files are classified automatically and load into the analysis environment whole.

What does variant interpretation look like?

One question spans ClinVar classifications, gnomAD population frequencies and gene constraint, Ensembl VEP consequences, and the publications that describe the variant — returned with an evidence table and citations attached.

Does it work for a team?

Yes. Teams are invitation-only with admin, manager and member roles and a shared workspace layered over personal storage. Projects, chats and files can be shared with one or more teams, and team visibility is independent of public share links.

Is it free to try?

Yes. Sign up with Google or an email address and start a project in a couple of minutes.

Start with a question. Finish with evidence.

codon.bio plans the work, runs the agents, and keeps every answer traceable to its source. Free to try, with Google or email.
